Technology leadership for situations that aren't working.
Available for permanent CTO/CIO roles, fractional engagements, and transformation advisory. UK and international.
Situations
- Delivery has stalled and no one can explain why
- The numbers change depending on who you ask
- A transformation is in flight but not landing
- The board has lost confidence in the technology function
- A PE asset needs technology leadership without a full-time hire
You don't need another report. You need it working.
What I do
Fractional CTO
2-3 days/week. 3-6 months. Direction, decision-making, and accountability at board level.
Transformation Leadership
Assess → prioritise → execute → stabilise. Work that gets the system working.
Technology Due Diligence
Pre-deal, carve-out, post-deal. What matters, what breaks, and what it will take to fix.
How I work
Assess
Everything scored: Rickety / Sickety / Ticketyboo. Dependencies mapped. Constraint identified.
Define
A clear sequence of work. What gets fixed first and why.
Execute
Hands-on leadership. I stay until the board can see it moving.
Prove
Evidence at every step. Measurable. Auditable.
Selected work
Transformation reset — £300m business unit
A Big Four-led transformation had failed. The programme was stalled, the business had lost confidence, and the vendor relationship was beyond repair. I was dropped in, ejected the vendor, and rebuilt the delivery plan from scratch. Confidence restored in 5 months. Throughput up 20% through automation and workflow redesign.
24 transactions in 7 years — both sides of the table
Joined through acquisition. Decoupled the business from a fully outsourced model (datacentre to desktop) to an insourced operation. Then through three further major transactions: acquired by CEB, CEB acquired by Gartner, then Gartner divested the business ($400m). 24 transactions total across acquisitions, integrations, carve-outs, and divestitures. Migrated infrastructure from on-premise to cloud mid-cycle. Delivered the final technology separation on timeline with zero service disruption.
AI in production — not pilots
Production implementations of AI across student outcomes, contact centre touchpoints, and application processing automation. Commercial and productivity gains realised. Not a proof of concept. Deployed, measured, operating.
Vendor consolidation — global enterprise
Built vendor onboarding and management processes from scratch. MSA framework, business-unit-level agreements, consolidation of services across global units into enterprise contracts. Consistent terms, managed cost, ~20% opex reduction across the largest global suppliers.
